| Bonfires blazed in Craughwell last Saturday evening, to welcome home the U-13 Camógie team following their great county final victory in Duggan Park, Ballinasloe. Buoyed up by wins over Ballinasloe, Ballindereen, Eyrecourt, Ardrahan and Gort, the girls faced Cappataggle, who had beaten them in the group stages earlier in the year. The first half was a tight affair, with Craughwell playing into a stiff breeze. Cappataggle opened the scoring with a point, followed up by a goal late in the half. On the stroke of half-time, however, a fine solo effort from midfielder Caitriona Farrell ended up in the back of the net, to leave the minimum between the sides at the interval. Craughwell started the second half brightly, with a goal coming from Jamie Gilligan early in the half. Craughwell were now dominant in most sectors of the field, thank to a fine work rate from the half forward line of the three Rachels – Kenny, Kelly and Cahill, the midfielders of Farrell and Jane Healy, and Cianna Greene, Marie Kenny and Sophie Ralston in defence. Another goal from Lorraine Prendergast, set up by Yasmine Tobin, put 5 points between the sides. With mere minutes remaining, the Craughwell defence came under heavy pressure, but Cappataggle were thwarted by the fine goalkeeping of Shannen Freaney, and the great efforts of Lisa Porter, Aishling Gallagher and Saoirse O’Connor. Moments before the fine whistle, an excellent point from Raychel Kelly sealed a wonderful victory for the Craughwell girls on a score line of Craughwell 3:1 Cappataggle 1:1. This victory was due to a combined effort from all twenty-five girls on the panel, and others who played their part in this great success were Dara Dolan who did well when introduced, Lisa Callanan, Louise Greaney, Hannah Furey, Siobhán Casey, Linda Horan and Lisa Horan. Three girls who missed the final due to holidays, but who played a big part all year were Leah Creaven, Nicola Callinan and Aoife Clarke. There were great scenes of euphoria as captain Lisa Porter accepted the shield in front of a sizeable Craughwell support. The team mentors were Julie Gallagher, Mary Porter, Pat Kelly and Carol Kelly. Many thanks to the team sponsors: Paraic & Breda Cawley and Michael Gallagher, |
